The Perkins engine is a popular choice for many boats—and with good reason. Based on an industrial engine, it will run for years, parts are readily available, and almost every yard is familiar with it.

Common wisdom has it that a new engine is always more reliable than an old one. Common wisdom has some merit. Unless it is really badly installed, a new engine will be more reliable—at least for several years. But is laying out $15,000 your best option?
